Floral Friday - Flower in Focus - Crimson Bottlebrush

Floral Friday - Flower in Focus - Crimson Bottlebrush
The Crimson Bottlebrush is native to south-eastern Australia, where it grows in dry thickets. Yet, thanks to the modern world, we have a flower pot filled with them in our little town somewhere in the Netherlands.

The plant is adapted to periodic burning. The oil from the leaves ignites almost as an explosion, and thus taking away the oxygen from the fire, saving the plant from it. Usually the seeds open after the fire, when conditions for germination of the seeds are ideal. There is little competition for young plants and it takes some time before the gets fire back.

"Floral Fridays is a monthly photography project with different themes each month. This series is about fun and taking time out to smell the flowers. To play along, please email Trishie (trishie@underlockandkeyblog.com) for next month's theme."

  2. Love that you featured an Australian native! I have a bottlebrush in my garden but it's not flowering at the moment as it is winter. I think it's so amazing that you can grow this plant in the Netherlands!

  6. Gorgeous photo! We have two bushes of the bottle brush and a tree in our front garden. The bushes blooms twice, while the tree keeps sprouting smaller, weaker blooms. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful weekend!

The Crimson Bottlebrush against the dark backdrop makes for a striking image. I like how you've caught the play of light on the flower. Beautiful!
